Frankenstein meets the island of misfit toys and . . . takes them to the circus!

A mysterious tinkerer brings to life an entire world of strange circus performers — some polished and complete, some clumsy and misshapen — then disappears, leaving them to figure out what they are made for.

A new work of dark whimsy from the company who brought Austin award-winning productions of The Jungle, Frankenstein, Riddley Walker, and most recently, Toil & Trouble.

Toil & Trouble: Reviews and Plugs

Spike Speaks

"How the eff do they do that, and do it so well, and do it show after show?"

"Trouble Puppet Theater Company has, time and again, presented rich, in-depth, stunning plays. This time . . . was no different."

"The puppets . . . are haunting and believable and stunningly emotionally nuanced."

"exceptionally rendered"

"Congratulations to the Trouble Puppet Theater on another jaw-dropping show."

The Statesman

"An adventurous and occasionally whimsical take on Shakespeare's "Macbeth," Trouble Puppet Theater's "Toil and Trouble," playing now through November 18th at Salvage Vanguard, brings the tale of betrayal and revenge to life (and bloody death) using exquisitely crafted puppets."

"With Graham Reynolds' music and Buzz Moran's sound effects, the show is acoustically superb, and Chris Owen's crackled sepia projections take us right up on the ramparts of an ancient Scottish fortress. Monica Pasut Gibson's costumes are exceptional, despite the fact that her models are only three feet tall. . . . Zac Crofford is an admirable man behind the (Macbeth) puppet, with a commanding voice and excellent grasp of the language. Caroline Reck is equally wonderful as Lady Macbeth."

The Chronicle

"genius"

"Word on the Web is that this version of Macbeth is amazing. Word on the Web is that the folks who brought us Riddley Walker and The Jungle and Frankenstein and all manner of dark delights … well, they've got another success on their puppeted hands."

A new Trouble Puppet patron

"I was not expecting it to be so easy for me to both sympathize and empathize with the puppets, but the authentic, detailed qualities of their movement made the suspension of disbelief seamless."

Trouble Puppet is honored, much much, to have made it onto two of The Austin Chronicle's Best of 2011 lists. Wayne Alan Brenner included our latest show in his Top 10 Arts Events of 2011, calling Riddley Walker "as compelling and enigmatic as a Eusa Show among the muck and mire of Inland." And Adam Roberts, in his Top 10 Notable Theatrics of 2011 calls our other 2011 mainstage show, The Jungle, "a riveting evening of puppetry."

KLRU presents Arts in Context: Trouble Puppet Theater

RIDDLEY WALKER

Trouble Puppet is very saddened by the December 13, 2011, death of Russell Hoban, who helped us create our production of his novel Riddley Walker. He was a brilliant man and a good friend to Trouble Puppet.
